"I can not draw the same face!"
"Each time I draw the same character, it turns into a different face! It looks like a different character!"
... For those people, "caricature tips" may be helpful.
Tips for caricatures help you draw the face of the character you designed, many times to make it look like the same person.
Moreover, if you use this tips, variations of your character design will increase.
This article summarizes the caricature tips that can be applied to manga and illustrations.
- Caricature is surprisingly easy

Caricature is surprisingly easy
I once thought that "a portrait is difficult".
Just looking at the photo and drawing it graphically makes it hard to draw a face that looks alike.
Even if I looked for the tips on internet, I could only find vague information, so I tried searching for books on caricatures.
... and I found a nice book! ↓
By reading this book, I gained a higher ability to draw the same face just by a little training.
If I trained without knowing the tips written in this book, I think it took more time to improve. As I mentioned in another article again, "theory + training" is important.
Tips on caricatures (from the book)
Analyze the positions of the face parts
The point of this drawing method is to grasp the position of the face parts.
Nonetheless, we do not measure the position of the parts accurately.
Simply analyze the position of the face parts to which of the five patterns it applies.
Compare with average position
In this book, the average position is called "平均型=Average type".
Then, if the parts are on top, it is "上型=Upper type",
if it is close to bottom, it is "下型=Lower type",
if it is close to outside it is "外型=Outside type",
if it is close to inside, it is "内型=Inside type".
The key is Aaverage type". If you learn the average position, you can understand the other 4 patterns by comparing it.
Many face pictures as examples are on this book. If you look at them, you can understand 5 patterns.
I tried to draw 5 patterns
I tried to draw 5 patterns, but although I draw only the middle picture below, I just shifted the face parts.
Also note the hairstyle, color of hair, contour of face, shape of parts are exactly the same, but you can see it to another person.
"Lower type" and "Upper type".
First, compare the average type with "lower type" "Upper type".
The left is the "下型=Lower type". The middle is "平均型=Average type". The right is "上型=Upper type".
The distance from the apex of the forehead to the tip of the chin is the standard. (The interval between the two red lines of the picture)
The key is the position of the eyes. The average eye position is slightly above the center line (Blue line of the picture). In the case of "Lower type", there are eyes on the center line.
The eye position is based on the center of the pupil.
The position of the mouth moves with eyes. Otherwise the balance of the face will be strange.
"Upper type", the mouth shifts up, the chin becomes longer. "Lower type", the mouth shifts downward, the chin becomes smaller.
"Outside type" and "Inside type"
Next, compare the average type with "Outside type" "Inside type".
The top is the "外型=Outside type". The middle is "平均型=Average type". The bottom is "内型=Inside type".
Again the position of the eye is the key.
The average eye position is slightly inside the blue line shown in the picture. The blue line is the quadrant of the width of the face. "Outside type", the eye is just the position of the blue line.
The mouth of "Outside type" does not have to be shifted down. You can move it. Or do not move
The "Inside type" mouth needs to be shifted inward, that is, upward.
The benefit of learning the caricature tips
The benefit of learning caricature tips is to make it possible to draw the same face, and there are others.
Variation of character design increases
The faces of the above 5 patterns have different impressions. In the book, it explains as follows.
From Tomoko Ogawara no Nigaoe Nyumon - Choukantan "Position Shiki" De Hajimete Demo Rakuraku Kakeru Tanoshimeru! (Syumi-Nyumon)
I translated as follows.
- Average type: Steady. Stable. Calm atmosphere
- Top type: Mature. Elegant. Few old-fashioned
- Lower type: Childish. Pretty
- Inside type: Active. Intellectual
- Outer type: Gentle. Slowly
Applying it to Manga characters and Anime characters, I think that it will be as follows.
- Average type: Standard character. Hero etc.
- Upper type: Adult women. Strong big woman. Tall powerful man etc.
- Lower type: Children. Lolita character etc.
- Inner type: Fat children. Fat people, etc.
- Outside type: Slow paced character etc.
In this way, the features of the five patterns can be used for character design.
This will greatly increase the variation of character design.
Changing the hairstyle of a character
I wrote that the criterion for determining the 5 types of face is the apex of the forehead.
That is, the hairstyle is almost irrelevant to the caricature tips.
That means that even if you change the hairstyle of the character, you can draw it so it looks like the same person.
For example, you can make episodes such as changing hairstyles of a character.
As a book on caricature tips, the book introduced in this article are recommended.
